Disaster Relief Tax Extension to May 11th
(Residents of MA, RI, & WV)

The IRS announced a deadline extension to May 11th for filing 2009 tax returns for individuals in areas considered federal disaster areas due to recent widespread flooding in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. This extension is for the following counties:
  • MA: Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, and Worcester
  • RI: Kent, Newport, Providence, and Washington
  • WV: Rayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Mercer, and Raleigh
This deadline not only affects the updated tax filing deadline for these individuals, but the deadline for Prior Year (2009) IRA Contributions as well. Should an affected individual send an IRA contribution after April 15, 2010 for the prior year, the envelope must be postmarked on or prior to May 11, 2010 and clearly state “disaster relief extension 2009 contribution” and the specific county the individual resides in.
